Life of a Jackal

Another day a new beginning freeware staff picks

There are a lot of best-free-software lists out there, but probably nobody’s hands pass over more freeware than the folks at, so I thought their staff-picked Best Free Software collection from a couple weeks back was worth noting. They split the free apps up into ten categories–Audio & Video, Business, Developer, etc–and their picks are very solid. The obvious is there, of course, but so are a few surprising picks. I especially recommend the Desktop Enhancements section that has quite a few gems like this brilliant Holding Pattern screensaver pictured at right.

It seems like we’ve been waiting forever to see a working version of Chandler, the much anticipated collaboration-PIM tool that was being developed by the Open Source Foundation. Well, they finally have released a presentable version of the Calendar Module for Chandler, and from the looks of it, Chandler is a winner. More than just another pretty PIM, Chandler’s vision was to challenge the Microsoft Outlook-Exchange standard with a more open, and robust tool. It seems as though the OSA team is marching, very slowly, toward that goal. Take a look for yourself to see what the Chandler team as been up to. You can also download a working version of this module, which is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux environments.

Windos Metafile Vulnerability

Microsoft has finaly put up a the patch for the critical vulnerability in their line of operating systems which allows Remote Code Execution.

If a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
